DCS Architecture Simulator – Interactive DCS Learning Tool
DCS Architecture Simulator
A Distributed Control System (DCS) runs a whole plant (refinery, power station, water plant). Sensors measure, I/O modules convert signals, controllers decide, and operators watch on screens. Click, drag and break things to learn how it works.
Try a failure
All healthy. Packets: orange = commands going down, blue = data going up.
DCS is built with redundancy: a standby controller and a second network take over without stopping the process.
Click any block
Each block in the diagram is one part of a DCS. Click one to read what it does and what it connects to.
The 5 levels
Pick a module
Field devices: sensors and final elements
Output tells you which I/O module to connect it to. Sensors measure; final elements (valves, motors) act on commands.
Signal chain (one loop)
Trend (last 120 s)
orange = setpoint, blue = measured level, green = valve output
Controller (PID loop)
Disturbance and faults
Level normal.
Raise the outflow: the level falls and the PID opens the valve. Break the wire: the AI module sees 0 mA (below 3.8 mA), marks the value BAD and the controller holds its output.
