Explore how a 3/2 solenoid valve controls a single-acting pneumatic cylinder. Use the interactive animation to switch between Retract and Extend positions and observe how compressed air enters or exits the cylinder.

How Does a 3/2 Solenoid Valve Work?

A 3/2 directional control valve has three ports and two switching positions. It is commonly used to operate single-acting cylinders and pneumatic actuators.

  • P – Pressure supply: Receives compressed air.
  • A – Working port: Connects to the cylinder.
  • R – Exhaust port: Releases air from the cylinder.

Two Operating Positions

  • Normally closed position: When the solenoid is de-energized, the pressure supply is blocked and the cylinder exhausts through R, allowing the return spring to retract it.
  • Actuated position: When the solenoid is energized, air flows from P to A, extending the cylinder against its return spring.

Applications of 3/2 Solenoid Valves

These valves are commonly used in pneumatic automation, single-acting cylinders, air-operated mechanisms, and pilot control circuits.
