3/2 Solenoid Valve
Normally closed, spring return, single-acting cylinder. Pick a position.
Explore how a 3/2 solenoid valve controls a single-acting pneumatic cylinder. Use the interactive animation to switch between Retract and Extend positions and observe how compressed air enters or exits the cylinder.
How Does a 3/2 Solenoid Valve Work?
A 3/2 directional control valve has three ports and two switching positions. It is commonly used to operate single-acting cylinders and pneumatic actuators.
- P – Pressure supply: Receives compressed air.
- A – Working port: Connects to the cylinder.
- R – Exhaust port: Releases air from the cylinder.
Two Operating Positions
- Normally closed position: When the solenoid is de-energized, the pressure supply is blocked and the cylinder exhausts through R, allowing the return spring to retract it.
- Actuated position: When the solenoid is energized, air flows from P to A, extending the cylinder against its return spring.
Applications of 3/2 Solenoid Valves
These valves are commonly used in pneumatic automation, single-acting cylinders, air-operated mechanisms, and pilot control circuits.
Try the interactive 3/2 solenoid valve simulator to understand valve switching, airflow direction, and spring-return cylinder operation.
